Watch this clip from the television show “Mad Men”:

Think about the message in the scene, about the appeal to emotion in advertising. How does this relate to the power of religious rhetoric? Do you see a similarity or difference?

Read Richard Santana and Gregory Erickson, “Consuming Faith: Advertising, the Pornographic Gaze and Religious Desire,” in Religion and Popular Culture: Rescripting the Sacred (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 2008), 50-66.

Attend the weekly tutorial/office hour on Wednesday. Please arrive no later than 10:10 am via Blackboard Collaborate (if you cannot attend, a recording of the webinar will be posted here). We meet for no more than 50 minutes (depending on attendance and the questions arising).

You can log into the the webinar from the Portal: click on the Webinar button on the navigation menu and select the session and copy the Guest URL into your browser. Be sure to get your computer set up for the session at least 15 minutes before we begin (you will need to download and set up the Collaborate Launcher before you can log on).

Be prepared to discuss the material assigned for this week: the lecture, “Yoga, Inc.,” and the video clip.
